Leeds betting statistics - 2024/25

IMAGO: Leeds secured a return to the Premier League by winning the Championship title.
IMAGO: Leeds secured a return to the Premier League by winning the Championship title.

Leeds left it late to secure their Premier League return as champions back in May, a late Manor Solomon strike guaranteeing a vital victory at Plymouth that saw them pip Burnley to the Championship title in the dying embers of the season.

Even if the title was finally wrapped up in the final knockings of 2024/25, the Whites were deserving champions.

They’ve made a solid start to life back in the top-flight, too, a 5-0 loss at Arsenal aside, with Daniel Farke overseeing a win over Everton and a draw with Newcastle at Elland Road to kick off his third Premier League campaign of his managerial career.

With some smart signings in the window, Leeds may just avoid dropping back into the Championship at the first time of asking.

Shots, goals and xG

Leeds16.5
Middlesbrough14.5
Coventry13.4
Sheffield United13
West Brom12.9

Farke’s Leeds side won admirers for the way in which they hurt Championship opponents. The Whites routinely dominated games, and it wasn’t a shock that they frequently chanced their luck on their way to the Premier League, finishing top for shots per game (16.5) in the 2024/25 season.

TeamGoals
Leeds91

Sheffield United70
Burnley69
Coventry66

Unsurprisingly, Leeds’ push for goals also meant they were incredibly prolific as they sought to put teams to the sword. Indeed, it’s not a huge surprise that they scored more goals (95) than any other team in the division, with star striker Joel Piroe winning the Golden Boot with 19 goals to his name.

TeamxG
Leeds96.86
Coventry79.46
Sheffield United74.28
Middlesbrough71.08
Sunderland70

As one might expect, Leeds also dominated in the Expected Goals metric, managing to marginally underperform their xG haul of 96.86, a stat that Piroe (18.7) again led the way in. Given the number of shots they managed, combined with the goals scored and xG generated, it’s hardly a surprise that they also ranked joint-top for xG per shot (0.13).

Key passes, possession and pass success rate

TeamKey passes per game
Leeds12.2
Middlesbrough11.4
Coventry10
Bristol City9.8
West Brom9.8

Given the attacking quality at Farke’s disposal, it shouldn’t come as a shock that they also ranked highly for both key passes per game (12.2) and clear-cut chances created (115), both more than any other team in the division. In addition, no player made more of the latter than Solomon (21) in the Championship last season.

TeamPossession
Leeds61.4%
Norwich58.1%
Swansea58%
Burnley56.8%
Middlesbrough55.4%

It was key that Leeds ultimately made their dominance across the league count, and with a possession average of 61.4% more than any other team, they certainly knew how to dictate proceedings. Farke’s attacking demands ensured they didn’t hold onto the ball for the sake of it.

TeamPass success rate
Leeds86.2%
Norwich85.3%
Middlesbrough84.9%
Burnley84%
West Brom83.6%

That being said, Leeds knew just how to hold onto the ball, and did so with absolute ease as they not only managed the best possession haul, they also returned a better pass success rate (86.2%) than any other team. As one might expect, they went up having won more games (29) than any other side, while only Burnley (2) lost fewer than Leeds (4).

Shots conceded, goals conceded and xG against

TeamShots conceded per game
Leeds6.7
Burnley9.4
Sheffield United10.9
Sunderland11
Middlesbrough11

As good as Leeds were going forward, they also excelled at the back. Their high possession return meant sides rarely tested the Whites, which meant they conceded the fewest shots per game (6.7) in England’s second tier last term as opponents struggled to forge chances.

TeamGoals conceded
Burnley16
Leeds30
Sheffield United36
Sunderland44
West Brom47

With teams struggling to get forward when they did take on Leeds, they also boasted one of the best defensive records in the league. Only Burnley (16) shipped fewer goals than Leeds (30) as they excelled at both ends of the pitch to really impress in their successful title campaign.

TeamxG Against
Leeds34
Burnley43.52
Sheffield United49.25
West Brom51.62
Sunderland54.37

In addition, Leeds also returned the lowest xG against haul (34) in the Championship, meaning they conceded eight fewer goals than they should have. They would have shipped fewer still had they not committed seven errors leading to an opposition goal, the eighth most, of which former first-choice shotstopper Illan Meslier committed three. For context, title rivals Burnley committed just one, so it would have been a more straightforward title push without these mistakes.

Tackles, interceptions and offsides

TeamTackles per game
Portsmouth14.6
Leeds14.9
Coventry15.1
West Brom15.1
Burnley15.2

With Leeds so easily retaining the ball, it meant they didn’t need to work so tirelessly when out of possession to ensure they were rarely troubled by opposition attackers. It meant that only Portsmouth (14.6) made fewer tackles per game than Farke’s side (14.9) with their ability on the ball negating the need to go in search of possession as frequently as other teams.

TeamInterceptions per game
Hull6.8
West Brom7.1
Middlesbrough7.3
Norwich7.3
Burnley7.3
Leeds7.5

This also saw Leeds rank low for interceptions per game (7.5), with that average the sixth lowest in the division as they relied on their distribution to minimise their need for off-the-ball actions. The best defence proved a good offence for Farke and his men.

TeamOffsides per game
Leeds2.3
Middlesbrough2.2
Stoke2.2
Millwall2.2
Swansea2.1

One further way that Leeds did minimise the pressure on their goal was the successful implementation of a high-defensive line. They became masters of catching forwards out when teams actually managed to win the ball from the Whites and venture forward, catching opponents offside an average of 2.3 times per game, the most in the Championship.

Farke knows, though, that Leeds need to tinker their game if they are to keep their head above water. They invested smartly this summer, bringing in the likes of Anton Stach, Lucas Perri and Gabriel Gudmundsson, three experienced heads in key areas, but Farke will have to sacrifice on his principles in order to beat the drop. After a dominant campaign, expect a more pragmatic Leeds this time around.
