West Ham betting statistics - 2024/25 season

The 2024/25 Premier League season was hardly one for the history books for West Ham. Julen Lopetegui was supposed to usher in a new era at the London Stadium following David Moyes’ second spell in east London, yet was relieved of his duties at the turn of the year.

The former Wolves boss oversaw just nine wins in his 20 league matches in the capital, though things hardly improved under the watchful eye of Graham Potter, the ex-Chelsea head coach, winning only five of his 18 matches in charge of the Hammers. West Ham will be hoping a full pre-season under Potter sets them up nicely for a strong 2025/26, because the campaign was, for want of a better word, poor.

Goals scored, shots, shots on target and key passes

A core reason behind West Ham’s struggles under Lopetegui and Potter was the inability to hit the back of the net with any real consistency. Indeed, the Hammers scored the sixth fewest goals in the Premier League last season (46), and averaged the eighth fewest shots per game (12.5).

Their inability to routinely chance their luck resulted not only in a poor goal haul, but also contributed towards a disappointing average of just 3.8 shots on target per game. While they had one of the Premier League’s best right wingers in Jarrod Bowen to call upon, the England international netting 13 times, they still struggled to frequently test the opposition goalkeeper.

Their issues in front of goal, though, shouldn’t come as a surprise. Not only did West Ham fail to frequently get among the goals, they faltered in their bid to create the requisite chances that could prove the difference between victory and defeat, evident in that they made the sixth fewest key passes per game (8.7) in the 2024/25 Premier League campaign.

Big chances, expected goals and dribbles

In addition to making so few key passes, West Ham also floundered when it came to creating clear cut chances, thus limiting the opportunities to get their name on the scoresheet. Given the ponderous approach, it’s not a shock that they created the fourth fewest goalscoring chances (56) in the division last season.

Unsurprisingly, with so fewer chances created combined with a low number of shots on target, West Ham faltered in their bid to post a solid Expected Goals haul. An xG for return of 53.35 was the seventh lowest in the division, and their goal woes meant they posted an xG underperformance of -10.35, which was the seventh highest underperformance.

That’s not to say that West Ham didn’t have the ability to put opponents on the back foot. Only Manchester City (9.9) completed more dribbles per game than the Hammers (9.1) in England’s top tier last term, showing that the issue was a lack of end product rather than an inability to get the better of a marker.

The issue for West Ham, however, is that their elite dribbler has since been sold to rivals Tottenham. While Mohammed Kudus fluffed his lines in front of goal, scoring just five times, he still ranked second for successful dribbles (92) in the Premier League last season, and the Hammers will miss the Ghanaian’s drive in the coming campaign.

Shots conceded, goals conceded and errors

The failure to put opponents to the sword not only hindered West Ham in their pursuit of goal but as they’d committed men forward, they also conceded a fair number of chances. As a result, it’s not a surprise they ranked highly for shots conceded per game (15.3), while they also shipped the seventh most counter-attacking goals having pressed forward to no avail.

Given the frequency with which they gave up chances to opponents, it’s hardly a surprise that West Ham also conceded the sixth most goals (62) in the division. They were fortunate in that the three promoted sides all struggled upon their respective returns to the Premier League; otherwise, the Hammers would have found themselves in serious trouble.

Individual errors also didn’t aid West Ham’s cause and while they didn’t concede the most errors leading to an opposition goal (10) in the Premier League last season, goalkeeper Alphonse Areola was a guilty party, having committed three after taking over the number one spot in east London.

There is, then, plenty of work to be done at the London Stadium if West Ham are to avoid another sub-par season. While they have lost experienced heads in Vladimir Coufal, Aaron Cresswell and Michail Antonio, the additions of Kyle Walker-Peters and, in particular, Callum Wilson do bolster the squad in key areas. The arrival of El Hadji Malick Diouf also injects dynamism into the side down the left. Even so, the early months under Potter were rocky to say the least.

The expectation, too, is that Leeds, Burnley and Sunderland will put up a better fight than Southampton, Ipswich and Leicester in the 2025/26 season. West Ham need to buck their ideas up, or the Hammers could be in for a testing time.
